Candid was born from a very personal starting point: our mental health. We’re a collection of college students frustrated by the bombardment of our wellbeing on many fronts: accessing resources is hard (and it’s only going to get harder), and the digital products we engage with do not retain us. Beyond this, college is a place where it’s natural to feel overwhelmed, and sink hard because of it. In recent years, rates of depression in college students have doubled to 40%. At the same time, the social platforms we’ve traditionally engaged with are rapidly transitioning to become entertainment platforms where it’s increasingly hard to see our friends and get a good grasp on their everyday lives. This is because their end goal is to maximize our dopamine, the excitement and rush we feel when we are seen and heard, and becoming entertainment platforms better serves this platform. And yet, we believe that connection will soon be as compelling. The world is moving to record rates of loneliness, but also towards a place where being vulnerable, expressive and, well, candid, is accepted and normal. At Candid, we want it to feel as good to be deeply and consistently understood by your closest friends as it is to reach a million strangers.
