Position Summary:

As a member of the Vanguard Learning team, the Middle School Teacher plays a pivotal role in delivering a transformative educational experience that empowers students to excel academically, embrace their individuality, and cultivate essential skills for success in a rapidly changing world. Working within our distinctive Montessori-inspired approach and mixed-age classroom setting, the Middle School Teacher collaborates with students, colleagues, and parents to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and social responsibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum Selection and Delivery: Partner to identify the preferred curriculum for implementation. Deliver engaging lessons and projects for children ages 11-14 in the areas of Language arts, Geography, the history of the United States and Ohio, and national, state, and local government, Mathematics, Science, and Health leveraging Montessori-inspired principles. Foster inquiry-driven exploration and student-led learning opportunities that promote deep understanding and mastery of content. Leverage online resources and tools as needed.

Individualized Instruction: Recognize and celebrate the unique talents, interests, and strengths of each student. Provide differentiated instruction and support to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, for a small group of learners, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive academically and personally. Utilize online resources and programs to aid in this endeavor; we support and encourage an environment where teachers and guides are learning alongside their students.

Classroom Oversight: Create a positive, inclusive learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and valued. Facilitate the development of a self-managed learning environment where students take ownership of their educational journey. Encourage collaborative decision-making and empower students to establish their own rules of engagement and self-management within the classroom. Provide guidance, ask thought-provoking questions, and foster open dialogue to promote student agency and accountability.

Assessment and Feedback: Use a variety of assessment methods to evaluate student progress and growth. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students to support their development and achievement. Emphasize growth mindset and resilience in the face of challenges.

Collaborative Community Engagement: Foster strong partnerships with students, colleagues, and parents to promote academic success, personal growth, and social responsibility. Create team-based projects, community service initiatives, and experiential learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, yet during classroom hours.

Professional Development: Keep an ear to the ground for innovative best practices in education, curriculum development, and instructional technology to continuously improve and enhance the program. Together, we’ll work as a team to experiment, refine and implement these ideas effectively.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience is highly preferred. Other experience working with young people (eg - coaching) is also prioritized.
  • Demonstrated passion for and experience in teaching young minds, with a strong commitment to student-centered learning and individualized instruction.
  • Familiarity with Montessori or other progressive learning models (preferred).
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic, innovative educational environment and embrace change.
  • Commitment to the values and mission of Vanguard Learning, including a dedication to fostering individualized learning, progressive teaching models, collaboration, and an emphasis on values-driven success .
