We are an emerging Microschool dedicated to providing a personalized, inclusive, and joy sparking education to children of diverse abilities. We believe with the right supports all children can engage in a rich and rigorous curriculum AND need loving, attuned and responsive relationships as a foundation for doing so. Our vision is to create a nurturing environment where every student, by design, feels the deep sense of safety and belonging required to risk asking questions, expressing opinions and making mistakes necessary to the learning process. Leveraging differentiated instruction and a small class size, students with and without disabilities will be supported to collaborate and learn side by side.

Role Overview

We are seeking a passionate, experienced, and visionary educator to join us as a Co-Founder and Lead Educator. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the vision, curriculum, and culture of our school from the ground up. This role is ideal for a creative, heart forward leader who deeply understands curriculum design and personalized learning, and has a genuine commitment to inclusive education. The initial focus will be on designing and implementing a tailored day and curriculum for our daughter, who has special needs. As we grow to a small group of 5-10 students, you will play a critical role in expanding our student base while maintaining our commitment to personalized, inclusive education.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum & Instruction

  • Develop and implement a curriculum that meets the unique needs of our daughter, leverages her interests and sparks joy (first 6 months).
  • Serve as lead educator, delivering high quality instruction and engaging learning experiences for our daughter and future children. Differentiate learning and scaffold projects for each student’s strengths and challenges.

Culture

  • Build deep, meaningful relationships with each child to foster a sense of trust, safety and belonging.
  • Create a loving, joyful environment where students feel valued, supported and free to express themselves.

Student Support

  • Be highly attuned and responsive to students’ body cues and holistic needs, providing co-regulation support in the classroom.
  • Continuously assess and monitor student progress, providing regular feedback to students and parents.
  • Collaborate with other educators, therapists, and specialists as needed to provide comprehensive support to each student.
  • With the support of parents, therapists and classroom aides, ensure students’ self care needs are met (eg toileting, use of mobility equipment, meal times).

School Design & Growth

  • Collaborate with the founding family on the vision and strategy for growing the microschool. Assist with growth by: recruiting new students, leading and iterating upon curriculum design, adding staff, exploring opportunities to scale (e.g. adding grades, creating network of resource sharing microschools).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field. Child Development knowledge helpful.
  • A warm, calming presence with a knack for connecting with others.
  • Extensive experience in teaching, curriculum design, and differentiated instruction.
  • Passionate about inclusive education, naturally assumes competence.
  • Informed understanding of a progressive approach to teaching (e.g. project-based, montessori, mastery-based).
  • Highly effective communicator. An ability to build strong relationships with students, parents, and professionals across disciplines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in teams and take initiative as a leader.
  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-through skills.
  • Familiar with relevant state learning standards. Able to identify where a student is struggling academically and support them or find resources to help.
  • Comfortable using technology to perform professional duties, including support for instruction, student learning and monitoring.
  • Experience with special needs learners and/or at-risk youth is valued.
  • Experience/open to training in: attuning to childrens’ body-based and emotional needs, DIR or relationship based approaches to education, trauma-informed care.

Duration & Compensation

  • Full time employment starting August 2024.
  • Compensation commensurate with experience.
