Job Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Associate to join our team in Boston, with a focus on in vivo studies involving small animals, particularly mice and rats. This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or an individual with up to three years of experience in animal research. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in working within a vivarium and possess hands-on experience with various in vivo techniques.
This is a 6-month contract position. The contract is eligible for renewal at the end of 6 months based on the needs of the company.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform in vivo procedures on small animals, including mice and rats, in compliance with established protocols.
- Administer substances via subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and tail vein injections.
- Conduct glucose and insulin testing, including Glucose Tolerance Tests (GTT) and Insulin Tolerance Tests (ITT).
- Collect and process biological tissues for analysis.
- Perform body mass composition analysis using appropriate techniques.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures and outcomes.
- Analyze and interpret data and prepare reports for internal use and external publications.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support ongoing research projects.
- Ensure compliance with all institutional and regulatory guidelines for animal care and use.
- Troubleshoot and optimize in vivo protocols and IACUC protocols and amendments as needed.
- Support in vivo study material inventory management, study tracker management, and data organization.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree (BS/BEng) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Animal Science, or a related field.
- 0-3 years of hands-on experience working with mice or rats in a vivarium setting.
- Proficiency in performing injections (subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, and tail vein), blood collection.
- Proficiency with necropsy and tissue collection.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to ethical standards in animal research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree (MS/MEng) in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Animal Sciences, Veterinary Sciences or a related field.
- 2-4 years of hands-on laboratory experience working with small animals including mice and rats at a pharma or biotech company.
- Experience in performing advanced glucose and insulin testing procedures, including GTT and ITT.
- Experience with advanced techniques such as body mass composition analysis, hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps a plus.
- Hands on experience with IVIS, micro-CT imaging, and drug administration via various routes of injection is strongly preferred.
- Experience with histology and immunohistochemistry a plus.
- Familiarity with body composition analysis techniques.
